  • Space: The Race to the Moon

    Tom Kemnitz

Paperback (Trillium Pr, April 15, 2001)
Part of the Adventures on the American Frontiers series for readers with a third to fifth grade reading level. This is a very clear and direct telling with very many color photographs. Contents include the cold war backgroung for the space race and the Game Plan for reaching the moon. Subsequent chapters are all told from different perspectives. Chapter 3: "Our First Sub-Orbital Manned Flight: Alan B. Shepard, Jr." details the flight of the first American to be launched. Chapter 4 investigates the phenomenon of the great popularity of John Glenn: "An American Hero: Orbiting John Glenn, Jr." The fifth chapter deals with the awful tradegy on the test pad that took the lives of three astronauts, Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffey, and the huge part Frank Borman played in helping the nation see the necessity of pressing on with the attempt to reach the moon: "Tragedy at the Test Site for Apollo 1." The next chapter recounts the successful moon landing in 1969: "Giant Steps To The Moon." The author then recounts the antics and fun of "Apollo 12: Moon Travelers Merrymaking" from the perspective of Alan Bean, who went with Dick Gordon and Pete Conrad to the moon. Much more frightening was the voyage of Apollo 13, recounted in chapter 8. These were the astronauts who barely made it back to Earth with little functioning power: "Apollo 13: The World Waits at Three Minutes and Counting." The author concludes with two chapters that detail some of the space program after the United States stopped sending men to the moon. The book is profusely illustrated by color photographs.
